MUSIC AND MEDICINE

The greatest thing about everything that has been happening over the past few months is how many doors it has opened. Recently I was given an incredible oppertunity to visit Howford Primary school in Glasgow and watch music therapy in action!

The charity that provides the sessions is called Nordoff Robbins. I heard about their work last year when I presented Tinie Tempah with an award at their ceremony.

You can learn about more their fantastic work here —->

I spent 4 years studying medicine in Glasgow and the brain and its relationship with music fascinated me!! I believe that whether you think you’re musical or not,  all humans are designed to respond to music. I was always really interested in researching music therapy but could never find the time in-between classes. Having the opportunity to sit in and see a music therapist in action and to have a first hand encounter of how the most simple aspects of music affected these children was very special! The children were so inviting - one little boy even ran up to me and sang heaven…that made my year!

The session really moved and inspired me. It was a great reminder of why I fell in love with music so young and the profound affect music has on us all!

If you’re interested in this area you MUST check out the book “Musicophilia” by Oliver Sacks. I’ve just finished it…so many fascinating stories and many questions answered :) . I’m still on the search for more information and experiences like these. I’m really looking forward to working with the Nordoff Robbins charity in the future!
